When New Testament scholar Bart Ehrman published DID JESUS EXIST? THE HISTORICAL ARGUMENT FOR JESUS OF NAZARETH, he not only attempted to prove the historical reality of a man called *Jesus of Nazareth*, he sharply criticized scholars who have sought to develop a new paradigm in the study of Christian origins, scholars who have claimed that Jesus was a mythical, not historical, figure, and that the traditional, Jesus-centered paradigm for studying the origins of Christianity must be replaced by an actual science of Christian origins.

In the present volume, some of those scholars respond to Ehrman's treatment of their research and findings, showing how he has either ignored, misunderstood or misrepresented their arguments. They present evidence that *Jesus of Nazareth* was no more historical than Osiris or Thor. Several contributors question not only the historicity of *Jesus of Nazareth,* they present evidence that the site of present-day Nazareth was not inhabited at the time Jesus and his family should have been living there.

This book argues that (1) not only is there no good reason to think that Jesus ever rose from the dead, (2) there is no good reason to suppose that he ever lived or died at all.

Starting in the nineteenth century, Rationalist scholars sought 'rational' explanations for the miracles of the Bible while accepting the premise that the events recounted had actually occurred. Thus, Jesus didn't really rise from the dead. Rather, he merely swooned, was entombed while yet in a coma, and was later rescued and revived. Then the legend of his resurrection developed when someone found his tomb empty. Modern apologists for the biblical stories take the far-fetched 'explanations' of the old-time Rationalists and use them to construct straw-man arguments against modern critics as though they too accepted the premise that the biblical texts were reliable history. Professor Price exposes the methodology of the apologists and rejects their presuppositions. Jesus did not rise from the dead for the simple reason that he was never dead. He was never dead because he had never been alive!

Leading New Testament scholar Robert M. Price has taken umbrage at the cavalier manner in which Rev. Lee Strobel has misrepresented the field of Bible scholarship in his book The Case for Christ. Price exposes and refutes Strobel's arguments chapter-by-chapter. In doing so he has occasion to wipe out the entire field of Christian apologetics as summarized by Strobel. This book is a must-read for anyone bewildered by the various books published by Rev. Strobel.

New Testament scholar Robert M. Price, one of America's leading authorities on the Bible, here summarizes much of the scholarship that has led him and a growing number of modern scholars to conclude that Christ ? a partial synonym for Jesus of Nazareth ? is mythical. Most usefully, Price has assembled evidence that shows that almost the entire "biography of Jesus" has been created from Greek Old Testament stories and themes and even incorporates motifs from Homer, Euripides, and perhaps Aesop. Because readers will have a hard time "taking it on faith" that the Jesus biography is merely a reworking of previous material, broad swaths of "Old Testament" context are quoted in association with each New Testament equivalent, so readers can judge for themselves whether or not Dr. Price's claim be true: the "Live of Christ" was not fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies; it was, rather, a conscious reworking of earlier literature.

Near the beginning of the twentieth century, Albert Schweitzer published a book that in English translation was entitled The Quest of the Historical Jesus. In that book, he reviewed and critiqued the many efforts that had been made to write biographies of the historical Jesus the man of flesh supposed to have been metamorphosed into the ?bermensch of the gospels of the New Testament. Schweitzer considered all those attempts to have been failures and concluded, perhaps sadly, that we could never know anything for certain about the historical Jesus and that the portraits painted by the scholars reviewed were but pale reflections of the researchers themselves.

Prof. Price here does for the twenty-first century what Schweitzer did for the twentieth: he updates us on the historical Jesus quest. Finding as did Schweitzer that all attempted biographies have been unconvincing and unsuccessful, he has decided it was time to include reviews of the works of Christ-myth scholars such as G.A. Wells, Earl Doherty, D.M. Murdock, Thomas L. Thompson, and Joseph Atwill. It now appears all but certain that the reason for the failure of all attempts hitherto to write a biography of a historical Jesus is simple: there was no historical Jesus.

The Human Bible: New Testament https://www.atheists.org/product/human-bible-new-testament/ Tue, 11 Jul 2017 14:13:13 +0000 https://www.atheists.org/?post_type=product&p=5205 Description

In his prodigious and eye-opening The Pre-Nicene New Testament, Professor Robert Price presented and analyzed 54 formative texts that were considered scripture by early Christian groups. In this more manageable volume, he brings us his latest thinking and English translation of the New Testament books that are still considered canonical by most Christians. Both scholars and believers will be amazed and either delighted or dismayed to be able to see those books without the distortion of the harmonizing translational lenses of confessional translators.

Price arranges the New Testament books according to their probable order of composition and the theopolitical groups in which they first functioned. Nearly all the books being composites resulting from sequential rounds of redaction, interpolation, and fusion, Price identifies the various compositional strata and finds ways in English to convey the original technical meanings of Docetic and Gnostic terms later Catholicized and disguised to conceal their heterodox beginnings. This allows the reader to see the New Testament books as no one has been able to see them for over a thousand years.

As with his previous magnum opus, each book is introduced with comments about the cultural setting, information about when a document was probably written, and significant textual considerations, which together form a running commentary that continues into the footnotes.
