Confessions of a Born-Again Atheist https://www.atheists.org/product/confessions-of-a-born-again-atheist/ Fri, 11 Oct 2019 17:02:56 +0000 https://www.atheists.org/?post_type=product&p=17745 Description

CONFESSIONS OF A BORN-AGAIN ATHEIST: The Implausible Lives of a Godless Guy is an autobiography in the form of 29 memoirs, each one focusing on Zindler's many lives, beginning with his life on an Austrian-type farm in Michigan during WWII (he tried to cultivate with a horse!); his tormented childhood and early college years as a homosexual living in a state where homosexual acts were felonies on par with first-degree murder; his life as a child prodigy in music, science, and linguistics; his life as a demimonde Don Juan; his life as a four-generational pater familias and his 48-year loving marriage to Ann; his life as a hypnotherapist, scientist, and Atheist activist, educator, and science professor; his life as a close confidant to Madalyn Murray O'Hair and his efforts to resurrect American Atheist Press after her abduction and murder in 1995. In this intimate self-portrait, an octogenarian public figure at last comes out of the closet.

About the Author

Frank R. Zindler has been an Atheist activist since 1959 when he began publicly to defend the teaching of evolution and to criticize religious encroachments upon the public sphere. A professor of biology and geology at SUNY for almost twenty years, he was forced to give up teaching when he joined Madalyn Murray O'Hair in a lawsuit that attempted to remove "In God We Trust' from American currency. A linguist and editor of scientific literature, he is a former member of The Jesus Seminar and internationally known advocate of the Christ-Myth Theory, arguing that "Jesus of Nazareth" was not a historical figure. He is the author of many books, including the four-volume THROUGH ATHEIST EYES: Scenes from a World That Won't Reason.

“It’s Not About the Sex” My Ass https://www.atheists.org/product/its-not-about-the-sex-my-ass/ Tue, 26 Feb 2019 20:36:56 +0000 https://www.atheists.org/?post_type=product&p=10345 Description

With wit, humor and style, Joanne Hanks takes you on a wild ride through the insanity of the Mormon-based polygamist cult that was her life for seven years. Get ready to laugh. Get ready to be outraged. And get ready to see polygamy as no one has ever revealed it before.

Joanne tells their crazy story with humor, satire—and insight. You’ll share her angst over sharing her husband. You’ll meet her “sister wives,” a prophet calling himself a “celestial stud service” who seeks divine guidance on threesomes, and apostles who dress in weird robes to curse the White House. You’ll fume at gut-wrenching tales of racism, sexual abuse, fraud, and manipulation. And you’ll find out why no one remembers when Jesus destroyed the world on March 26, 2000.

“It’s Not About The Sex” My Ass is more than an entertaining read. It’s a cautionary tale about the power of delusional thinking, and a hopeful tale of one family that came to their senses and found the courage to leave.

A Christmas Sermon https://www.atheists.org/product/a-christmas-sermon/ Tue, 11 Jul 2017 19:38:51 +0000 https://www.atheists.org/?post_type=product&p=5215 Description

This is the famous Christmas Sermon written by Colonel Ingersoll and printed in the Evening Telegram, on December 19, 1891.

In answer to this "Christmas Sermon" the Rev. Dr. J. M. Buckley, editor of the Christian Advocate, the recognized organ of the Methodist Church, wrote an article, calling on the public to boycott the Evening Telegram for publishing such a "sermon.'

This attack was headed "Lies That Are Mountainous." The Telegram promptly accepted the issue raised by Dr. Buckley and dared him to do his utmost. On the very same day it published an answer from Colonel Ingersoll that echoed throughout America.

About the Author

Robert Green Ingersoll (1833-99) was an American orator. Son of a Congregationalist minister, he was trained in law and admitted to the Bar in 1854, and he rapidly showed promise of becoming one of the most brilliant attorneys in America. His title of Colonel belongs to the Civil War, when he served in the cavalry. He began in 1860 to give Rationalist lectures, and during the next 30 years his vibrant oratory, warm sentiment, and impressive personality made him the most effective force for progress in the New World. His direct and trenchant criticism of Christianity, enlivened by wit and satire and infused with the rich and fine emotionalism of his character, instead of alienating believers, drew crowded audiences in nearly every town in America.

Aching and Praying https://www.atheists.org/product/aching-and-praying/ Thu, 06 Jul 2017 17:09:00 +0000 https://www.atheists.org/?post_type=product&p=5142 Description

'Aching and Praying' is a children's book that illuminates the world of slavery and the role of religion and the Christian bible in justifying and supporting the institution of slavery. The story involves a black African slave who is helped to escape by the little daughter of his white owner. He escapes not only from the slavery of forced servitude but also from the mental slavery of religion. Many of his fellow slaves, however, remain enslaved to both their master and his religion.

Many of the moments of the story are accompanied by relevant scriptures such as Matthew 25:23: 'His master said to him, 'Well done, good and faithful slave. You were faithful with a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master.'

Ages of Gold and Silver https://www.atheists.org/product/ages-gold-silver/ Thu, 06 Jul 2017 17:56:54 +0000 https://www.atheists.org/?post_type=product&p=5144 Description

From the forward by Madalyn Murray O'Hair

Here again [John G. Jackson] presents to a world unwilling to listen his thesis that civilization has African roots ? not Indian, not Chinese, but African; that the original race of humankind was Black; and that magnificent cultures preceded the European. He again demands a hearing for the facts which, slowly now accumulating, support his thesis. What is more, he pinpoints the bias of the white Christian culture which would hold in contempt any but its own manufactured greatness and exclusivity.

About the Author

JOHN G. JACKSON was an educator, lecturer, author, and man of principle. He was born on April 1, 1907, into a family of Methodists. In old age, he averred he had been an Atheist since he became old enough to think. The family minister once asked him when he was small, "Who made you?" After some thought he replied from his own realization, "I don't know."

He lived for nearly fifty years in New York City, lecturing at the "Ingersoll Forum" of the American Association for the Advancement of Atheism (1930-1955). During a parallel period he wrote articles for the Truth Seeker magazine. From 1932 to 1972 he was a writer and associate of the Rationalist Press Association in London, England. A pioneer in the field of African and Afro-American studies, he taught such courses from 1971 to 1980 at Rutgers University, New York University, and in Illinois.

An Atheist Epic https://www.atheists.org/product/an-atheist-epic/ Mon, 24 Apr 2017 18:12:29 +0000 https://www.atheists.org/?post_type=product&p=4871 Description

An Atheist Epic tells the dramatic story of how fourteen-year-old William J. Muray III and his mother Madalyn Murray (later O'Hair) challenged the compulsory recitation of the Lord's Prayer and forced reading of the Christian Bible in the public schools of Baltimore.

It tells of the beatings young Bill received with the approval of school authorities, police, and courts, and of the attacks on the Murray home instigated and led by good Christians ??attacks that led quite directly to the fatal heart attack suffered by Mrs. Murray's father. It describes the Christian execution of little Garth's kitten and the sorry demise of the two 'Atheist dogs' that Bill and Garth had as companions after loss of the kitten. Virtually all the religious attacks upon the First Amendment-mandated separation of state and church that America has endured since 1963 have been in retaliation to 'Murray v. Curlett' -- the case that Madalyn successfully took all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court to obtain the ruling that forced prayer and Bible reading were unconstitutional.

The improbable series of events that led to that decision are painted here in colorful detail.

About the Author

Madalyn Murray O'Hair, whom Life magazine dubbed "The Most Hated Woman in America," is best remembered for her 1963 landmark case Murray v. Curlett, in which the US Supreme Court ruled in her favor, outlawing forced prayer and Bible reading in the public schools of America. A fighter for reason and a defender of the 'Wall of Separation' between state and church right up until being violently murdered with her family in 1995, even today she continues to be America's best-known atheist.

Many feminists seek ways to reconcile religion, particularly Judeo-Christianity, with modern principles of civil rights for women. Madalyn O?Hair shows how self-defeating such attempts are. Probing the earliest writings of Judeo-Christianity, its history, and the Bible, she exposes this religion for what it is ? anti-woman to the core.
