Dali[edit]
The appropriate place for the discussion is the policy change talk page. Once that is ironed out, the image can be undeleted without any further discussion. But until such point, it is not de minimis per Commons now and is thus out of scope, as explained by MichaelMaggs in the discussion, including his conversation with Mike. The closure was not an indication that this must be salted never to return, but at THIS point, the conversation belongs on the de minimis policy page, not at COM:UND. Thanks! -- Avi (talk) 17:32, 15 March 2009 (UTC)
- The GC does not decide policy or matters of scope, Evrik, we Commonists do. Everyone but yourself believes that the image is NOT de minimis now and will not be until the Commons de minimis policy is changed. Please respect that and work on changing the Commons de minimis policy instead. That is the appropriate venue. -- Avi (talk) 17:53, 15 March 2009 (UTC)
- Evrik, if the consensus of the respondents in the discussion is not to restore it until the policy is clarified, the discussion should be closed. Do you realize that you are single-handedly ignoring the consensus opinion of all the other respondents? -- Avi (talk) 18:10, 15 March 2009 (UTC)
- The discussion is over, Evrik. Everyone but yourself wants the image to be deleted until the policy is ironed out. Keeping it open will not return the image faster. -- Avi (talk) 18:16, 15 March 2009 (UTC)
Evrik, this is just an unasked for piece of friendly advice. Your behavior in re-opening the discussion is grounds for a behavioral complaint. Furthermore, you may be alienating people who agree with you that the policy should be adjusted because of your perceived intransigence and possible lack of a desire to work with other people. My advice to you would be to accept the consensus on COM:UNDEL and work to quickly adjust the de minimis policy so thatthe image comes back into scope. Feel free to ignore me :) -- Avi (talk) 18:29, 15 March 2009 (UTC) /
- I second that. Your attitude is becoming disruptive. –Tryphon☂ 18:36, 15 March 2009 (UTC)
Evrik. I'm going to reinsert Tryphons second closure of this undeletion request. A new undeletion request may be filed if, and only if, our policy of de minimis is changed. Do not revert this closure again. Regards, Finn Rindahl (talk) 18:45, 15 March 2009 (UTC)
I second the above comments. Your re-opening of closed DRs is disruptive. Let me be frank: you are at risk on being blocked if you do it again. --MichaelMaggs (talk) 21:47, 15 March 2009 (UTC)
Welcome, Dear Patroller ![edit]
Hi Evrik !
You now have the Patroller right and may call yourself a patroller ! Please take a moment to read the updated Commons:Patrol to learn how Patrolling works and how we use it to fight vandalism.
As might know already, the patrolling functionality has been enabled for all edits, no longer just for page creations. This enables us to keep track of, for example, edit made by anonymous users on Commons.
We could use you help at the Counter Vandalism Unit. For example by checking an Anonymous edits checklist and patrol a day-part. There is a short video tutorial which addresses some things you may not know.
If you have any questions please leave a message on the CVU talkpage, my talkpage or on IRC. –Krinkletalk 17:04, 28 March 2010 (UTC)

Boy Scouts of America[edit]
The Categories "Scouting in [state]" does not guarantee the photo also is part of "Boy Scouts of America", that's why photos have both categories. Boy Scouts of America is under Scouting in the United States, not under each individual state. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mjrmtg (talk • contribs) 17:37, 4 February 2013 (UTC)
- Yes, but if both Boy Scouts of America and Scouting in [state] are under Scouting in the United States, do they need both? The BSA cat is overpopulated. Evrik (talk)
- Do we need "Boy Scouts of America in Alabama" - "Boy Scouts of America in West Virginia" then? --Mjrmtg (talk) 15:56, 5 February 2013 (UTC)
- I don't know. Probably not. Probably best to have two categories then to start slicing the pie so fine. Evrik (talk) 15:59, 5 February 2013 (UTC)

- User:CommonsDelinker/commands/filemovers can be only edited by file movers
- CommonsDelinker will refuse replacing ‚.anything‘ with ‚.svg‘
- If you like to replace a file globally, you can do this using your user account, CORS (requires a modern browser) and User:Sreejithk2000/JustReplace.js. (This requires a minimum knowledge about how to use JavaScripts.

Picture of the Year 2013 R2 Announcement[edit]
Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2013 is open![edit]
- ⧼Wikibase-terms/Evrik⧽: Deutsch, Ελληνικά, English, français, magyar, italiano, македонски, 日本語, русский, svenska
Dear Wikimedians,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.
Round 2 will end on 7 March 2014. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2013/Introduction/en Click here to learn more and vote »]
Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Category:Scouting in...[edit]
In 2012, you created the series of categories of Category:Scouting in Connecticut and its ilk. You then categorized them under Category:Events in Connecticut and so on. Since most images of scouting are not defined one-time events, I believe the scouting categories would be better under Category:Culture of Connecticut and so on. (Individual scouting events like Jamborees would still belong under the Events categories). Since this would affect a large number of categories you created, I wanted to check with you before making the move. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 15:56, 31 July 2015 (UTC)

Cira Center edit[edit]
Allow me to explain the reason for the edit I made on the file File:Cira Centre, Philadelphia-east.JPG that you reverted. The reason I removed the category 'Buildings by César Pelli' is a twofold reason. First off, the photo would belong in Category:Buildings by César Pelli which I created today rather than Category:César Pelli, as it is an image of one of his buildings and not of him himself. The second reason is that I placed Category:Cira Center, to which the file belongs, in Category:Buildings by César Pelli, thus the file is already included as a result and does not need to be tagged into this category individually. Have a wonderful day. Best wishes!

Evrik, the only thing your malformed/incomplete (didn't have a closer look) template does is adding the page it is used on to the Category:Pages with script errors like one can see at Silver Peak. Please do some tests using a sandbox or (better) leave it. By now I don't see any need nor advantage of more than one disambiguation template but maybe you can tell me. --Achim (talk) 16:56, 12 December 2016 (UTC)

- It doesn't and in won't do this way. You cannot expect one or two templates simply copied from en:wp to Commons to work properly here. Have a look at the source page of en:Template:Geodis and scroll down for to see its transclusions. And please stop immediately creating new disambig categories without previous discussion otherwise I will treat that as vandalism. Disambig cats have to be fed by templates only. --Achim (talk) 18:02, 12 December 2016 (UTC)
- It's not vandalism. Don't even go there. I created the categories so the template wouldn't exist in a vacuum. I also tied them to the exiting category structure on some of the other wikis. @Achim55: I would appreciate it if you could fix the template so it works properly. Evrik (talk) 18:06, 12 December 2016 (UTC)
- Category:All article disambiguation pages will be deleted because there are no articles on Commons. --Achim (talk) 18:16, 12 December 2016 (UTC)
- @Achim55: , agreed. Evrik (talk) 18:22, 12 December 2016 (UTC)
- Changing the category name inside {{Disambig}} leads to a change of links on about 8.000 (didn't count exactly) pages. I'm afraid, but that shouldn't be done on the fly. --Achim (talk) 18:38, 12 December 2016 (UTC)
- Before you reverted me, the system had made the change rather seemlessly. In any case, it's 'more correct.' Evrik (talk) 18:43, 12 December 2016 (UTC)

There seems to be some misunderstanding: Although articles on wp projects and galleries on Commons have the same namespace number 0 they are completely different. i) The purpose of galleries is to assist the categories. If a cat like for example Category:Cologne Cathedral contains thousands of images, some typical ones of these can be presented using a gallery (Kölner Dom for example) to get an overview. ii) So galleries without any image (for example Silver Peak by now) are treated as unwanted and can be deleted speedily according to the policy. iii) As Commons is a multilanguage project several galleries using different languages on the same theme can coexist being connected to the same category. iv) There are thousands of things/topics of which no gallery pages exist but cat pages do. Therefore disambiguations are here usually handled on category pages. Hope you understand my actions better now. Best, --Achim (talk) 19:12, 12 December 2016 (UTC)
- yes, but there are hundreds of galleries being used in lieu of categories. What to do with them? Evrik (talk) 19:19, 12 December 2016 (UTC)
- I don't know if "in lieu of" fits or I don't get it (I'm no native speaker). If a cat contains 2 images and a gallery the same 2 images without any additional information the gallery can be deleted. If a gallery contains images of a special aspect of anything that is categorised correctly one can consider to create a new category. But on the other hand 1-image categories as well as galleries are unwanted (except a few special cases like notable persons or cats that might be populated per WLM or similar projects). --Achim (talk) 19:32, 12 December 2016 (UTC)
- Evrik, please have a look at some disambiguating pages I created during the past weeks: Category:Washington Park, Category:Ermengarde, Category:Alaincourt. Such pages may contain red links for not yet existing categories, doesn't matter. The advantage of disambiguating cats is that images can get assigned to them via upload so that they can be moved to an appropriate cat from there. That doesn't work using galleries as uploaders normally don't assign galleries during upload. Most of the existing disambiguating gallery pages are some years old and might be converted to disambiguating categories if someone finds the time to do so. Best, --Achim (talk) 21:28, 12 December 2016 (UTC)
- That works. What then do do with all the galleries that currently exist? Evrik (talk) 21:45, 12 December 2016 (UTC)

Observances by month has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry. If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category. In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you! |

Category:July 1863 in Europe[edit]
Hello Evrik, I am sorry that I did not give an explanation for my revert on the "July 1863 in Europe" -category. I thought it was just a mistake by you. There are many reasons for using templates on such categories: the template creates a navigation box on the page, sorting is standardized and if there is need for a change it can be implemented by just editing the template. I will now revert your change again, I hope it is ok with you now. --Estormiz (talk) 06:03, 28 August 2018 (UTC)

@Jmabel: like I said, I was being threatened (see this warning). I can no longer post any comments to Commons:Village_pump#Disambiguation. If you read this Commons:Administrators/Requests/Jcb (de-adminship), this Commons:Administrators/Requests/Jcb (de-adminship 2) and this Commons:Administrators/Requests/Jcb (de-adminship 3) - it's the same behavior. Evrik (talk) 16:52, 7 January 2019 (UTC)
- Oppose - you have been warned several times for this exact behaviour and you knew very well that your last edit at Silver Peak would get you blocked. So well, that you immediately started canvassing the next edition of a discussion that we have had over and over again in the past few years. The clear outcome has been over and over again that Wikimedia Commons only accepts disambiguation pages in category namespace. You are well aware of that. Jcb (talk) 17:11, 7 January 2019 (UTC)
- You say this, but you have never once listed an official policy, nor links to any policy discussions. I moved the discussion to the Village Pump and pinged anyone who I had seen had discussed this before, simply to move it off my talk page. Your block, and your subsequent comments here are pure retaliation. Evrik (talk) 17:17, 7 January 2019 (UTC)
- @Jcb: If Evrik will agree to refrain from the conduct in question while discussion proceeds, I would strongly urge you to rescind the block. I don't see anything wrong with his canvassing to have a policy clarified or even changed. He should be able to advocate for that openly.
- Evrik, would you agree to hold off on such edits while discussion proceeds? - Jmabel ! talk 17:14, 7 January 2019 (UTC)
- Yes. Evrik (talk) 17:17, 7 January 2019 (UTC)

Captions in January[edit]
[edit]
My apologies if this is a duplicate message for you, it is being sent to multiple lists which you may be signed up for.
Hi all, following up on last month's announcement...
Multilingual file captions will be released this week, on either Wednesday, 9 January or Thursday, 10 January 2019. Captions are a feature to add short, translatable descriptions to files. Here's some links you might want to look follow before the release, if you haven't already:
- Read over the help page for using captions - I wrote the page on mediawiki.org because captions are available for any MediaWiki user, feel free to host/modify a copy of the page here on Commons.
- Test out using captions on Beta Commons.
- Leave feedback about the test on the captions test talk page, if you have anything you'd like to say prior to release.
Additionally, there will be an IRC office hour on Thursday, 10 January with the Structured Data team to talk about file captions, as well as anything else the community may be interested in. Date/time conversion, as well as a link to join, are on Meta.
Thanks for your time, I look forward to seeing those who can make it to the IRC office hour on Thursday. -- Keegan (WMF) (talk) 21:09, 7 January 2019 (UTC)CFDs you closed[edit]
Hello, Evrik. You might have noticed that I undid several of your CFD closures. I think they were improper closures because:
- You participated in the discussions, and CFDs should be closed by uninvolved users.
- Your closures were contrary to the majority opinions. Sometimes that can be done if there is a good reason, but you gave no reason. In fact, you made no closing comment at all on the CFD page, contrary to standard practice.
By the way, the notices you left about the CFDs were left in the wrong places: They should be on the talk page of the category being discussed, not on the talk page of the discussion. Thanks. --Auntof6 (talk) 19:40, 14 March 2019 (UTC)
- @Auntof6: , I don't believe it was improper as my participation was minimal. Also, there was no consensus either way - so closing forgotten discussions after more than two years should have been no big deal.
- Commons:Categories for discussion/2016/12/Category:Lutsk by day - Opinion evenly split
- Commons:Categories for discussion/2016/12/Category:Switzerland by day - 3 votes to 2
- Commons:Categories for discussion/2016/12/Category:Dmitry Medvedev by day - Opinion evenly split
- Commons:Categories for discussion/2016/12/Category:Vladimir Putin by day - Opinion evenly split
Actually, until someone voted this month, opinion was against deleting the categories, so again ... so closing forgotten discussions after more than two years should have been no big deal.
I did make a comment in the Edit summaries when I closed the discussion. Finally, oops. I did put the tags on the wrong pages. Evrik (talk) 19:57, 14 March 2019 (UTC)
- You have to count the proposer as supporting, so the counts weren't quite as you listed. I also don't think it matters how much you participated. You not only participated, but you closed in favor of your own viewpoint -- that makes a difference, too. And people won't usually see comments in edit summaries: it's usual to comment on the page. See other closed CFDs if you aren't familiar with that. And the proposals aren't necessarily forgotten just because they're old. --Auntof6 (talk) 20:09, 14 March 2019 (UTC)
- The counts were close enough, besides it's not a vote. There was no consensus for the idea. Put it up for a neutral and to see if the discussions get closed. Evrik (talk) 20:14, 14 March 2019 (UTC)

We need your feedback![edit]
Hello. Apologies if this message is not in your native language: please feel free to respond in the language of your choice. Thank you!
I am writing to you because we are looking for feedback for a new Wikimedia Foundation project, Structured Data Across Wikimedia (SDAW). SDAW is a grant-funded programme that will explore ways to structure content on wikitext pages in a way that will be machine-recognizable and -relatable, in order to make reading, editing, and searching easier and more accessible across projects and on the Internet. We are now focusing on designing and building image suggestion features for experienced users.
We have some questions to ask you about your experience with uploading images here on Wikimedia Commons and then adding them to Wikipedia. You can answer these questions on a specific feedback page on Mediawiki, where we will gather feedback. As I said, these questions are in English, but your answers do not need to be in English! You can also answer in your own language, if you feel more comfortable.
Once the collecting of feedback will be over, we will sum it up and share with you a summary, along with updated mocks that will incorporate your inputs.
Also, if you want to keep in touch with us or you want to know more about the project, you can subscribe to our newsletter.
Hope to hear from you soon! -- Sannita (WMF) (talk to me!) 09:56, 2 August 2021 (UTC)
File:Lena Yada (crop).jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.
The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.)

Beach bunny has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. Thank you! |

Revert[edit]
And why are you doing this?Jonteemil (talk) 20:36, 31 May 2022 (UTC)
- Per Commons:File_naming policy, the name violet is to generic. Evrik (talk) 20:41, 31 May 2022 (UTC)
- You're right that it isn't a good name, that's why you moved it. Now, what is the reason to why you're changing the redirect target from the proper file name to File:Name.jpg?Jonteemil (talk) 22:28, 31 May 2022 (UTC)
- You have a better target? Evrik (talk) 22:29, 31 May 2022 (UTC)
- Eh, yes, obviously since I undo your edit haha, or am I misunderstanding something?Jonteemil (talk) 23:25, 1 June 2022 (UTC)
- The redirect for the word Violet should not be going to the wedding dress picture. If you want to redirect it towards a color, or a shade of purple, that might be OK. Otherwise because the commons controls images for all the wikis it should not go to the wedding dress.Evrik (talk) 00:57, 2 June 2022 (UTC)

This image directly pertains to the Boy Scouts of America, even if it is a political cartoon in opposition to the organization. Did Category:Boy Scouts of America need to be removed? PseudoSkull (talk) 18:44, 5 September 2022 (UTC)
- @PseudoSkull: what about Category:Boy Scouts of America in art? Evrik (talk) 15:48, 6 September 2022 (UTC)
You may want Category:Boy Scouts of America diffused, but as far as I can tell that doesn't make it a meta-category. Meta-categories are things like Category:Steamships by name or Category:Automobiles by year, things where it literally doesn't make sense to put an image directly in the category. - Jmabel ! talk 17:25, 6 September 2022 (UTC)
I think what you wanted was either {{CatDiffuse}} or {{Categorise}}. - Jmabel ! talk 17:26, 6 September 2022 (UTC)
- I'm okay if you want to change the template. Evrik (talk) 17:27, 6 September 2022 (UTC)

Boston and Providence Railroad milestones[edit]
Why have you made this change twice? The Boston and Providence Railroad ran in both Massachusetts and Rhode Island, and the files currently in that category are from both states. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 05:34, 25 February 2024 (UTC)
