Starting in the nineteenth century, Rationalist scholars sought ‘rational’ explanations for the miracles of the Bible while accepting the premise that the events recounted had actually occurred. Thus, Jesus didn’t really rise from the dead. Rather, he merely swooned, was entombed while yet in a coma, and was later rescued and revived. Then the legend of his resurrection developed when someone found his tomb empty. Modern apologists for the biblical stories take the far-fetched ‘explanations’ of the old-time Rationalists and use them to construct straw-man arguments against modern critics as though they too accepted the premise that the biblical texts were reliable history. Professor Price exposes the methodology of the apologists and rejects their presuppositions. Jesus did not rise from the dead for the simple reason that he was never dead. He was never dead because he had never been alive!
Robert M. Price was born in Jackson, Mississippi, and moved as a child to New Jersey where he attended a fundamentalist Baptist church. He even became president of a chapter of Intervarsity Christian Fellowship and was for a time an apologist of the sort he refutes in Beyond Born Again, Deconstructing Jesus, The Incredible Shrinking Son of Man, and Jesus Is Dead. Editor of The Journal of Higher Criticism, he is also the author of The Widow Traditions in Luke-Acts, The Da Vinci Fraud, The Reason-Driven Life, and the monumental The Pre-Nicene New Testament.? He holds a PhD in Systematic Theology from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary and a second PhD in New Testament from Drew University. He has served as Professor of Religion at Mount Olive College in North Carolina and is a member of the Jesus Seminar and its successor, the Jesus Project.
