Dr. Ellis explores the traits necessary to a minimally anxious and hostile individual, and how religion and a belief in a supernatural being eradicate each of these personality traits. Furthermore, Dr. Ellis gives insight into the irrational beliefs held by most seriously disturbed individuals, and shows how religion supports these detrimental beliefs. His basic premise is, ?All True believers in any kind of? orthodoxy are distinctly disturbed, since they are obviously rigid, fanatic, and dependent individuals?. Many liberal religionists of various groups are? emotionally childish. For that is what all manner of religion essentially is: childish dependency.?

About the Author

Albert Ellis [1913-2007] received his B.B.A. from City College, New York in 1934, his M.A. in 1943, and his Ph.D. in 1974 from Columbia University. In 1948 his career started in the northern New Jersey Mental Hygiene Clinic and by the next year he was the chief psychologist at the Diagnostic Center, in Menlo Park. By 1950 he was the chief psychologist of the New Jersey Dept. of Human Services. However, he always maintained his own private practice in psychotherapy. In 1959 he founded the new psychotherapeutic method of Rational Emotive Psychotherapy. He received various awards for his research and lifetime of psychotherapeutic practice including the 2005 Lifetime Achievement Award, Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies, and the 1996 Outstanding Clinician Award, American Psychological Association.
