Kelly was raised in Utah as a Mormon. After spending 30 years devoted to the church she rapidly studied her way out of religion. Today she is an unapologetic atheist and is very active in the secular community in Houston, Texas. She currently serves in the leadership of Humanists of Houston, Houston Atheists, and SHORE: Secular Houston Organizing for the Right to Equality. She enjoys volunteering with various local groups, especially with HOPE (Homeless Outreach Providing Essentials) for Houston.
