Cranford, NJ—American Atheists stands in solidarity with the people of France and all those affected by the unspeakable horror of the terrorist attack carried out in Paris Friday night. We mourn for those who lost their lives and offer our deepest sympathies to their families.
Attacks carried out by religious extremists strike at the very core of what it means to be a part of our global community. This violence undermines free expression, stifles dissent, and is a terrible reminder of what happens when fundamentalism of any form is viewed as just or moral.
Now is the time for us to reaffirm our commitment to the principles of liberty, equality, and brotherhood. We must recognize the absolute right to free speech, to equality of all people regardless of their religious beliefs, and our shared humanity.
We stand shoulder to shoulder with people across our world who fight against religious fundamentalists who would use violence to silence criticism and competing ideas.
